Your Questions About Rowing Machines.

Donna asks…

Is a rowing machine the best Equipment for a whole body workout?

I am looking for something that will help my whole body aerobically and also toned.

admin answers:

Yes. The rowing machine will tone your abs, but, thighs (especially), shoulders, and back. This will only work if you use it regularly and well.

Make sure you don't injure yourself. Because rowing is a full body sport, it has a high chance of back injuries. When you use it, make sure you sit up tall. Try even picking a spot on the wall so your chin is at a 90-95degree angle from your chest. This will insure a straight back. Keep your shoulders back and when you go to take a stroke, don't lunge, only go as far as your body will go while maintaining good posture.

When using the erg at first, start slow. Rowing is a sport that is rewarding but challenging. Maybe start by rowing 1000 meters at a stead (medium fast pace - in the rowing world we call this 3/4 pressure). After doing this a few times, start putting more pressure on. This is where it gets fun! The utter pain of your burning muscles, although agonizing, is very fulfilling. Next, try rowing for longer times. 20 minute rows (called 20min peices) are great for cardio and strength. This kind of row should be kept at around 7/8pressure. Try to challenge yourself each time. Try seeing if you can increase the number of meters you can row in 20min.

When searching for a rowing machine, go for a newer model of Concept 2. They are reliable and smooth. Make sure whatever you have has a screen.
